ROOT CANAL TREATMENT

Also known as endodontic therapy, root canal therapy is carried out to relieve pain caused by infected tooth pulp thereby eliminating infection and to protect healthy, surviving tooth from further degradation. The tooth consists of two basic components the root and the crown. The root is made up of soft tissue within it and is called pulp, which is responsible for the nourishment of the tooth.

The Dental Pulp

Also known as endodontic therapy, root canal therapy is carried out to relieve pain caused by infected tooth pulp thereby eliminating infection and to protect healthy, surviving tooth from further degradation. The tooth consists of two basic components the root and the crown. The root is made up of soft tissue within it and is called pulp, which is responsible for the nourishment of the tooth.

Infection

The justifications of deep tooth decay can be attributed to
  • Dental trauma resulting in chipping or cracking of the tooth, root fracture and gum disease
  • Repeated dental procedures
  • Faulty crown implants

A pulp that cannot repair itself can die due to deep cavity bacterial invasion through the abscess. Bone gets infected which results in weakening, breakdown and eventual loosening of the tooth.

Signs and symptoms for an endodontic treatment may include:
  • Pain
  • Tenderness to touch
  • Difficulty or pain chewing
  • Tooth discoloration
  • Drainage of lymphnodes
  • Swelling and tenderness of lymphnodes

Endodontists at Sparks Cosmetic and Dental Centre in Anna Nagar specialize in root canal treatments successfully restoring efficient chewing, natural appearance, biting force, normal sensations and protecting teeth from excessive strain. Radiographic evaluations and thorough physical examination decides the mode of treatment.

The procedure

Injections are used to administer local anaesthesia – this numbs the tooth and the tissues around it. In case of acute inflammation of the pulp, numbness may take a while.

A dental dam is placed over the affected teeth and the area adjacent to it so that the affected tooth protrudes through the hollow meant for it, thereby isolating it from the rest of the oral cavity. Root canal treatment at Sparks Cosmetic and Dental Centre is carried out in a highly sterile environment. There are minimal or no instances of bacterial contamination due to the saliva emanating from the rest of the mouth.

A hole is drilled through the biting surface from either the front of the tooth or back of the tooth to access the pulp chamber. The pulp along with the nerves inside it are extracted and the canals disinfected with antibacterial solutions.

Tiny flexible instruments are used to shape the canals so as to receive fillers. Prior to being sealed, the root canal is cleansed of any debris to ensure proper fitting of the fillings. Generally gutta-percha is used to fill the space.
